The Mystick Krewe of Louisianians is an organization dedicated to bringing the vibrant traditions of Mardi Gras from Louisiana to the nation’s capital. For over 75 years, they have hosted the annual Washington DC Mardi Gras, a grand celebration that showcases Louisiana’s rich culture and heritage. This year marks the 76th annual installment of this festive event, which features fantastic food and drinks, live entertainment, and dancing.

The event will occur at the Washington Hilton at 1919 Connecticut Ave NW, Washington, DC 20009. The festivities include the Captain’s Dinner Dance and the Mardi Gras Ball on Saturday, January 25th. Attendees can look forward to a weekend filled with pageantry, revelry, and a celebration of Louisiana’s finest offerings. In the Spring, there is also a designated DC Mardi Gras Day, which will be celebrated on March 4th.

The upcoming installment of the Washington DC Mardi Gras event will be a grand celebration! Last year’s festivities took place at the Washington Hilton, featuring events showcasing Louisiana’s rich heritage. Attendees enjoyed traditional Mardi Gras elements, including elaborate costumes, parades, and live music, all reflecting the state’s unique cultural tapestry. The event allowed Louisianians and guests to celebrate together, fostering a sense of community and shared tradition.

The 2025 Washington Mardi Gras is scheduled for January 25, with the theme “Duty, Honor, Louisiana.” Congressman Troy A. Carter, Sr. of Louisiana’s 2nd Congressional District, will chair the 76th Washington Mardi Gras. Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) Roderick “Rico” Alvendia, a New Orleans attorney and founding partner of the firm Alvendia, Kelly, and Demarest, has been selected as King, and Kendall Williams, a recent graduate of Louise S. McGehee School, will reign as Queen.

A Bit of Mardi Gras History:

Mardi Gras, or “Fat Tuesday,” has roots tracing back to ancient Roman festivals like Saturnalia and Lupercalia, which celebrated spring and fertiSpringAs Christianity spread, these pagan traditions were incorporated into pre-Lenten festivities, leading to the emergence of Carnival. In France, the celebration became known as “Mardi Gras,” and French colonists later introduced it to North America.

In 1699, French-Canadian explorer Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville established a camp near present-day New Orleans on Mardi Gras day, marking the beginning of the tradition in the region. Both Mobile, Alabama, and New Orleans, Louisiana, claim to have hosted the first official Mardi Gras celebrations in the United States.
