The nation’s capital is the epicenter of our nation’s history and culture, and the National Museum of American History is one of the most enriching spots of them all. Time travel through American history as you visit fascinating collections and unparalleled exhibits. The National Museum of American History consists of artifacts and research that span over decades, giving you a glimpse into the most historical moments in our nation. As you stroll through the museum, you will explore topics varying from pop culture to the War of Independence. See history come to life as you get snapshots of pivotal moments in history and view national treasures, such as President Lincoln’s top hat, Dorothy’s ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz and the flag that inspired the our national anthem, the Star Spangled Banner.
Although many of their exhibits are long-running, there are also ones that are special celebrations or temporary exhibits, so be sure to check the calendar for which ones are coming up. A few of the current exhibits you won’t want to miss before they leave are: JFK Centennial Celebration (Now – Aug 27th), Innovations in Defense (Now – Sept 17), and Ella Fitzgerald at 100 (Now – Apr 2). Additionally, ongoing exhibits include America On the Move, Advertising War, American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith, The American Presidency: A Glorious Burden, American Enterprise, and many more.
The museum is located in the National Mall at Constitution, NW between 12th and 14th Streets, about a 10-minute drive from our bed and breakfast in Washington DC. Admission to the museum is always free and is open daily from 10 am to 5:30 pm. In addition to their superb exhibits, the American History Museum also hosts a variety of fun events during After Hours! Tomorrow their hosting Food in the Garden – Flavoring America from 6:30 pm – 9 pm, where you can enjoy food, drinks, and activities. The National Museum of American History is a must-see in DC!
