Just outside of the beltway is a beautiful place called Mount Vernon, it was home to our first nation’s first president, George Washington and his wife, Martha Washington. There is much history to explore and many events that shaped the fabric of our nation here. Many events are still held at Mount Vernon every year, for all ages, from 2 to 200. One of those events is this years 2017 Wine Festival and Sunset Tour, which will be held on the grounds of Mount Vernon May 19-21 from 6p.m. – 9p.m., held rain or shine. Located just 25 minutes out of Washington DC, Mount Vernon is just a short commute from our DC B&B. Why not just stay with us for the whole weekend?
While you’re visiting Mount Vernon, you can visit the grave site of George Washington, where he was laid to rest at the turn of the 19th century. A lesser known fact about the first president of the United States is that the Congress wanted to have him buried in the center of the Capitol Building. Washington stated many times that he wanted his final burial to be in Mount Vernon and sure did not want to be gloried in the manner that Congress was suggesting. After he died, congress lobbied Martha to move his body, but she did not agree. The empty tomb that lays just below the Crypt is still there today, as you will see if you go on a U.S. Capitol Tour.
Mount Vernon’s 2017 Wine Festival and Sunset Tour will be a great time for all. With live music, tours of the mansion and cellar and scenes along the Potomac River, this is an event you don’t want to miss. Tickets are $38 a person and can be bought on their website. While you’re in DC for this weekend, we invite you to stay at our Historic Bed and Breakfast, located in the heart of the city. Our room rates include a fresh made breakfast each morning!
