This year, the 61st annual American Academy of Psychotherapists (AAP) Conference is being held October 19-23 at the Omni Shoreham Hotel, near our Washington DC bed and breakfast. The theme of the 2016 conference is “What’s Love Got to Do With It? The Relationship in Psychotherapy”, and it will primarily focus on how love relates and should be integrated into engaging and transformative psychotherapy. AAP is a multidisciplinary community of psychotherapists who strive to invigorate and develop therapists.
The conference will open on Wednesday afternoon and all-day Thursday with multi-session Institutes, which will incorporate intimate interpersonal connections and intense learning. On Wednesday, the sessions will delve into the following topics: “Navigating the Territory of Love and Countertransference”, “Trauma Resiliency: The Path of Sensations Training Institute”, “Sex, Drugs, and Rock and Roll”, and “Love and Hate in Therapeutic Relationships.” Some of the topics being covered on Thursday include, “Building Loving Relationships with Your Practice and Colleagues”, “What’s Ethics Got To Do With It?”, and “A Live Demonstration of Group Therapy for Couples.”
Friday and Saturday will be the Conference portion and will consist of plenaries and a variety of workshops. In addition, there will be AAP opening and closing experiences, community experiences, and a Saturday night dinner and dance. The plenaries and workshops will be geared towards navigating love, relationship endings and treating sexual issues in couples. The Saturday morning plenary will be led by Nancy Sharp, award-winning novelist and national speaker, who will tell her story about love and loss and the panelists will discuss it in depth addressing the fear, shame, pain and recovery involved.
Registration fees for the conference are $445 before September 10th for members and $495 after September 10th. For non-members, tickets are $495 through September 10th and $545 until the event. If you wish to attend for certain days, you can purchase single day passes for $200 per day.
